Plans are meant to be changed

Jan 11, 2009 I raiding, tanking.

Last night was supposed to be the second night of our Naxx-10 run. Earlier in the day, the raid leader and I had discussed some things we could have done differently, including Grim and the other DK using Raise Dead to eliminate the corpses of the Crypt Guards as we kill them. I’m not sure that honestly would have worked, but it was at least worth a try…

But…we ended up short people. 3 overall, and the dealbreaker was that we were short a healer. So…we broke the raid into two parties and I swapped Grim out for my hunter, Malanior, so that a tank that needed better gear could get more experience. We decided to run Utgarde Pinnacle (and the other group decided to run it on heoric), and beyond several wipes in the gauntlet, it went well. When we got out of UP, Mal enchanted Greater Defense onto the brand new chest piece.

I think as a guild we probably need to run more level 80 instances, more heorics, and maybe even postpone Naxx-10 runs for a bit. That ultimately isn’t my decision though, so time will tell.

I’m not in a real guild so I’m usually stuck doing Heroic runs in PUGS and I’ve found Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle to be one that people struggle the most with because of that gauntlet run. A lot of it has to do with miscommunication and people getting stuck on opposite sides of the freezing path.

Keep up the good work here, by the way. It’s nice to see someone working on their DK and writing about it. I’m slowly working on my own DK alt.

    Thanks for the kind words.

And the gauntlet run is downright evil. On both toons (the huntard and the DK) I’ve gotten trapped away from my group. Not a huge deal on the huntard (ranged DPS, ftw!), but clearly an issue with the DK. Beyond that though, we breeze through the instance (even if pulls go badly).

I want to do more heoric runs, but I’d rather do them in guild – I don’t have to worry about ninja looting that way, which seems to be a major problem on our server.

I’m glad I found this site. I’ve been blindly plunging forward on my own DK tank, and beginning to wonder if I was all alone. Keep it up!

Hi Skoll! Check out the blogroll (on the right) for several other Death Knight (and DK tanking) websites.

There’s a trick on that guantlet that makes it easy. Farm spears but don’t move down the guantlet.

Specifically, have two people collect 3 spears each then go back into the hallway you came from to reset the encounter.

Once the encounter is reset, let your healer mana up. Everyone run all the way down to the end. AOE the first pack of mobs. Then shoot down the boss the first time he flies close enough.

    Problem solved.

Have you tried Corpse Explosion instead of raise dead? Or were there too many mobs in the area?

No corpse explosion on my build.
