Be prepared…this is an all-in-one for DPS and it’s a doozy. It reflects the changes through patch 3.3, including the 4 new dungeons added since I last made gear lists. There’ll be another post for the tanky types, and it’ll be laid out similiar to this one. Due to the extreme length of these posts, I will be using cuts, so I apologize to anyone trying to read this on a feeder – you’ll have to get the whole thing on the site.

Patch 3.3 completely revolutionized the way that gear was acquired. With the LFG tool making finding a group for any heroic a non-issue, there is no longer any excuse for not running instances such as Oculus. This list assumes that you will be running heroics, grinding rep, and doing the Argent Tournement dailies. It assumes you won’t see raids like Naxxramas, Ulduar, and Trial of the Crusader.

In terms of DPS, your first goal is to reach the melee hit cap (which is currently 8% or a rating of 263). After that, you want to stack strength and expertise. Please also bear in mind that while most classes wouldn’t want to go over the “hit cap”, it’s not a bad thing for a Death Knight, particularly an Unholy specced Death Knight (which this site assumes you are). Given how many ’spells’ we use, it’s worthwhile to also try and get your Spell Hit to 368 (assuming you have Virulance 3/3). [Caveat: Draenei Death Knights should be looking to get at 230 melee hit and 342 spell hit, respectively.] You’ll eventually want to try and get to at least 21 expertise (assuming 5/5 Rage of Rivendare), but that can be a challenge at this stage in the game. [Caveat: Human Death Knights (mace, sword) and Orc Death Knights (axe) need only 18 expertise if equipping the weapon their racial talent is for.]

One last note – Tier 9 gear listed are the Alliance versions. The Horde versions are identical, but named after Koltira. As for Tier 10, if you’re raiding, you’ll need to buy the raid pieces (and not the potentially more attractive non-set alternatives) as you’ll need to turn in these pieces for their upgraded versions.
