Gearing your Unholy DK for Naxx: Part 7

Jul 21, 2009 I dps, gear, tanking.

This is Part 7 in a series of posts on outfitting your Unholy Death Knight prior to entering Naxxramas. As established previously this is not necessarily a best in slot list, but more a guide to where and how to obtain items that will have you at least adequately prepared.

See Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and Part 6 of this guide.

Neck – DPS

1. Gold Amulet of Kings – This necklace drops from King Ymiron in Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle. It holds the distinction of being the only item on this list that has strength instead of agility, and has a decent amount of crit, but there are better items available. Still, the ease of getting this item raises it to #1.

2. Necklace of Arcane Spheres – This necklace drops from Xevozz in Heroic Violet Hold. It’s one of the best necklaces you can have prior to Naxx – but the inherent RNG nature of Violet Hold makes grinding for this item a pain in the butt.

3. Pendant of the Outcast Hero – This necklace can be purchased with 25 emblems of heroism, and is the best itemized neckpiece for an Unholy DK prior to Naxx. If you have extra badges, this is a good item to consider purchasing.

Honorable Mention: Titanium Impact Choker – This necklace is crafted by a jewelcrafter at the material cost of 2x Titanium Bar, 4x Dragon’s Eye, 6x Eternal Air, 6x Eternal Fire, and 1x Frozen Orb. While the red socket is nice, the ArPen is largely wasted on an Unholy DK. If you’re going to have something made with titanium, there are better places you could spend it then here.

Neck – Tanking

1. Shadowseeker’s Pendant – This necklace drops from Jedoga Shadowseeker in Heroic Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom. With a healthy amount of effective health and avoidance, this neck gets the nod as #1 due to having dodge over parry. Remember, you get parry rating from strength, so you shouldn’t be trying to stack it.

2. Pendant of the Nathrezim – This necklace is a possible chest reward after killing Mal’Ganis in Heroic Culling of Stratholme. It has a little less effective health and avoidance than #1, and also has parry instead of dodge.

3. Chained Military Gorget – This necklace can be purchased with 25 emblems of heroism, and has the most avoidance for a death knight prior to Naxx. It’s also near the top in effective health. If you have extra badges, this is a good item to consider purchasing.

Honorable Mention: Titanium Earthguard Chain – This necklace is crafted by a jewelcrafter at the material cost of 2x Titanium bar, 4x Dragon’s Eye, 6x Eternal Earth, 6x Eternal Life, and 1x Frozen Orb. While this item does have a socket and the most effective health and comparable avoidance to the others on this list, it’s a lot of expense for an item you’ll likely replace very quickly.

Trinkets – DPS

(note: Given that you need 2 trinkets, I’ll simply offer a list of 6 trinkets, with a list of where to get them, and what the cost is [if applicable]).

1. Sphere of Red Blood – Drops from Keristrasza in Heroic Nexus.

2. Incisor Fragment – Drops from King Dred in Heroic Drak’Theron Keep.

3. Meteorite Whetstone – Drops from King Ymiron in Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle.

4. Mirror of Truth – 40 Emblems of Heroism.

5. Darkmoon Card: Greatness (+90 Strength) – Created from Darkmoon Nobles Deck.

6. Darkmoon Card: Death – Created from Darkmoon Undeath Deck.

Profession Specific: Figurine – Emerald Boar [JC Only]. 2x Titanium Bar, 2x Forest Emerald, 1x Scarlet Ruby. Socket as necessary.
Mighty Alchemist’s Stone [Alchemist Only]. 15x Adder’s Tongue, 15x Tiger Lily, 1x Frost Lotus.

Trinkets – Tanking

Unfortunately, tanking trinkets are far harder to come by then their DPS equivalents. While there are several profession based options, the Northrend options are otherwise pretty slim. If push comes to shove, you may want to consider some Burning Crusade trinkets, such as Commendation of Kael’thas.

1. Essence of Gossamer – Drops from Hadronox in Heroic Azjol-Nerub.

2. Seal of the Pantheon – Drops from Loken in Normal Halls of Lightning.

3. Valor Medal of the First War – 40 Emblems of Heroism.

4. Offering of Sacrifice – Drops from Gal’darah in Heroic Gundrak.

Profession Specific:
Jewelcrafting -
Figurine – Ruby Hare – 2x Titanium Bar, 2x Scarlet Ruby, 1x Autumn’s Glow. Socket as necessary.
Figurine – Monarch Crab – 2x Titanium Bar, 2x Monarch Topaz, 1x Forest Emerald. Socket as necessary.

Alchemy -
Indestructible Alchemist’s Stone – 20x Deadnettle, 12x Pygmy Oil, 1x Frost Lotus.

Engineering -
Sonic Booster – 2x Froststeel Tube, 4x Overcharged Capacitor, 2x Handful of Cobalt Bolts. Not Unique Equipped!

There is one more post that will indirectly part of this series, covering specs, glyphs, and other general thoughts. It will be more designed towards someone who is about to step foot into Naxx (read: has already gotten enough gear to be prepared), as something they can consult as they go through.

Thank you so much for this post. As a brand new Unholy DK, I was completely clueless why people were gemming AP instead of strength. In looking for the answers, I stumbled upon this site which will ~greatly~ help me on my way to 80.

I'm not even going to ask if I can link to this post from my own blog, I'm just going to do it. Again, thanks. It's brilliant info.

    virtual hugs.
