In which the cow gets some play

For the first time in several weeks, Grim got some play today as more then just a mining mule. And while the cow makes a rather good mule, I’ve missed playing him, and missed the fun that is a DK.

So today, with the aid of Wowhead, MaxDPS.com, and the sandbox feature of warcrafter.net, I began to construct Grim’s new set of gear. While his DPS spec will be a pretty standard 17/0/54, I wasn’t quite sure what the best-in-slot pre-raid items were for a DPS. And since I hadn’t previously had any intention of Grim being anything but a tank, his DPS gear was sorely lacking.

The achievement sidebar tells a good portion of the tale of evening. Grim ran two heroics as a wannabe DPS, in groups made up of members of Mal’s guild (that will hopefully also eventually be Grim’s guild as well). Zizzle spearheaded the forming of these groups, and for this, me love him long time.

At this point, Grim is in pretty good shape. He needs a chest, gloves, pants, and both trinkets. He also needs a ring, but I logged off of him for the night with the mats in his bank, so that’ll happen in due time. I had made him a set of spiked titansteel treads, but those may get replaced before they ever get worn (by the boots offered by exalted Ebon Blade).

If all goes well, I should be back playing Grim on a more regularly basis in very short order, in a spec and gear that should make Grim (or Mal!) a very attractive option for guild-run instances and raids.

It’s getting better at least, and for that I’m grateful.

That’s a decent spec for Unholy (pwned higher-level DKs with that >D). Lots of Rune generation to bust out Death Coils when your other attacks are on Rune cooldowns, provided you have the Rune Power to spare =) Stack lots of Strength since [Impurity] bebefits 25% more spell damage from your attack power.

if you have the rep for it, get the ebon blade boots. They will last you a very long time. i never used the titansteel treads because of it (and mainly because they were damn expensive when i was gearing up).

and as for a trinket, badges and the one from heroic nexus are your best bet (though i never got that bastard to drop the trinket all 12 times i beat him).

@Chibikeni Yeah, I hit up maxdps, swapped out some of things that I had come up with with different items that ranked higher. And while some things can’t be avoided (lack of quest gear, for example), I should be in good shape after another round of heroics.

@Admon The death inured sabotoons from Ebon Blade Exalted were the ones I intend to get – once I finish getting to exalted. I’m about halfway there with probably 2 heroics to run tonight (plus the normal boatload of dailies), so I should be in good shape. The whetstone was on my list, but the incisor fragment from H: DTK is a better item, so its what I’m aiming for.

i wasnt talking about the whetstone, i was talking about the sphere of dragon’s blood (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37166). though i guess it all depends on your hit rating.

At least how the anticipated build/gear combo appears in warcrafter, hit rating shouldn’t be an issue – even without gemming for hit. Course, this means I actually need those items to drop for me, and that may prove to be the challenge…
