The best laid plans…
Feb 21, 2009 I raiding, tanking.…are sometimes destined for failure.
Tonight was supposed to be our Naxx run. And it did go off, even though were were forced to pug 2 spots to a guild that I like only slightly more then toe-lint (though not all the members are bad – it seems their young teenage males are just worse then average).
After having my gear analyzed and dismissed by their DK (a tank who respecced DPS) and having our plans mocked as simplistic, we worked our way into the Spider Wing. Though I wasn’t particularly fond of the attitudes we were already encountering, I figured with the addition of their firepower that we’d make quick work of the wing and perhaps even see some “new to us” content. Here comes my sign – I turn to head down the hall to initiate the first pull, and promptly have my WoW client have a fatal error. Ruh roh.
Log back in, clear the rest of the trash, and approach Anub’Rekhan, where Grim’ll be the MT. I head in, start the fight, and start to position him so I can run around the outside edge…and the WoW client has another fatal error. I immediately tell them on vent that I DC’d but the message must not have gotten relayed (or else they just figured I’d keep on tanking? Beats me) because they kept misdirecting and using tricks of the trade on me… whatever the case, by the time I logged back in, they’re all dead and I soon follow.
So we all head back in, rebuff, and I try to initiate the pull again. This time I get maybe one shot in before my laptop has a BSOD. Biiiiig ruh roh. The error message indicates a driver issue, and I upgraded every driver that I could. After several reboots (and a message relayed through a friend in the guild to the guild leader that I didn’t anticipate being back anytime soon) I finally attempted WoW again…and it seems to be behaving now.
Unfortunately, by the time I got back in (about an hour after my BSOD), it appeared the raid had broken up, which is very frustrating. I had been looking forward to that once I found out I was going and to have it end so prematurely (and have it be my fault to boot) just sucks.
Hopefully tomorrow will go better – assuming we have enough people that is!

No :< That really sucks! I hope that you were able to fix whatever it is that was causing your BSOD and that people won’t be such asshats in the next run.
(BTW, I had to look up BSOD – what a loser, huh?)

Ouch, gotta love how well-timed those client crashes are, huh? The last computer I had seemed to enjoy doing that too, though I don’t think it ever BSOD’d on me. It just waited in the shadows until I would do something like pull Prince Malchazar, then jump out and say, “Surprise! Better start logging back in.”
As for the picky schmuck DK you had commenting on your gear, I’m not real sure where he’s got room to complain. What you’ve got is easily enough for Naxx; the only weak spot’s your trinkets, but those old-world ones certainly aren’t shabby and their replacements were kinda obnoxious to farm. I suppose there’s the Emblem of Heroism sigil too, but that’s really more of a personal preference whether you want more threat or more avoidance.

@Anea I think I was as I haven’t had the problem yet again. A techie friend is encouraging me to “upgrade” to Vista, but I’m resisting thus far.
@Valdesta I suppose that all depends on if we’re going again tonight and if we pug in the same people. And who knows if I’ll be allowed to tank given my issues from last night…
@Ragar Yeah, I’d love to upgrade the trinkets (and the sigil, though that one works for now) with newer variations – but they work for now. We farmed both of those so that I’d at least have *something* defense oriented.

damn, that sucks that you got blue screen’ed (had to look it up as well) right before a raid.
also as far as the badge sigil goes … i love it. i got it last night because i was supposed to offtank most of nax (as a dps spec … thank god for geared out healers) and i picked it up right before nax. It proc’ed every time i used icy touch, so it was a permanent 53 defense increase, and it was extremely helpful with my tanking (my defense rating got up to 555
).
the sigil is extremely good, so i suggest getting it before the trinket.
Feb 21, 2009, 4:33:06 pmGrim is already over the defense cap though, so there’s really no need for that sigil for him. I can certainly see the use of it in your case though.

Aw, that must have been disappointing! WoW and comp crashes are never a good thing… but this makes it extra bad. Hope you’ve got more luck next time!

Dunno when “next time” will be at this point. There’s a guild meeting scheduled for this Friday. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

Sorry, for the late post.
While some may disagree with this, I’m not too fond of the idea of relying on Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight (or w/e) to bring me to Defense cap. I really don’t see that as the purpose of the proc. More like a chance at 1 and a halfish % avoidance, that shouldn’t be too crippled by diminishing returns. I’d have preferred dodge rating, which might have been able to squeeze up closer to 2% avoidance. Hell, I’d have preferred *nearly* anything to a random proc of Defense rating.
That said, it was the last tanking item I purchaesed with badges, only after I had the belt, neck, both T7, and the trinket, AND the other Sigil available through badges. Frankly, I think both are pretty poor offerings, suffer too much from a “one size fits all” mentality, and the Sigil you got at level 55 is possibly overall superior to either one, which is just sad.
I only got them so I could get the gear achievement, and I wouldn’t get hassled by idiots who happen to know what the Armory is. Plus, I’m running out of crap to buy with badges, and I’ve never set foot in Naxx.
I have no problem being inspected and critiqued, if it weren’t that most of those who do this are morons who think that any tank/healer that doesn’t outgear the content by a few tiers is “undergeared”. I tell them that if they are looking to get carried through content, they don’t have to come.
