Here’s looking at you, kid
Feb 16, 2009 I inane. After finally getting the “Be Mine” achievement on Malanior (and thus getting the Love Fool meta achievement), I finally have time to do a new post from Grimtorn. This will be based on Anea’s UI post from the other day.
Normally, I would utilize the built in gallery feature of wordpress, but since that seems to shrink images (and I haven’t the patience at the moment to beat that into submission so it behaves properly), I’m just going to use photobucket images – feel free to click the images below to be brought to full sized versions.
Due to space concerns, the remainder of this post will be behind a ‘more’ tag.
It’s first worth noting that I play exclusively on my laptop (a Dell XPS M1330), and thus play at a 1280×800 resolution. Since my screen real estate is limited, I try to make the most of it. I’ve tried several pre-made UIs in the past (like Spartan) and while there’s often a lot of things I like about that type of setup (like how the top half of my screen is clean), I usually end up moving back to a UI of my own making so I can have more control.
The first shot is of my UI as it normally appears, a clean shot if you will.

Next, a shot with x-perl in full raid/party mood.

And finally, a paint by number, of which explanations will follow…

1 – Raid/Party/Player/Pet Frames – X-Perl
One of several possibilities for raid frames, I like it that I can arrange it where I want it, and display as much or as little information as needed. I can see target of target, target of pets target, etc.
2. Action Bars – Bartender4
As Anea said in her post, Bartender gives you extremely customizable bars. Mine appear at 85% of the normal size, and can be moved, turned, or displayed only in certain “stances”. This is particularly useful on my babydruid, where I don’t need to see cat abilities when in bear form, and vice versa.
3. Buffs – Elkano’s BuffBars
I’ve experimented with several various buffbars, and Elkano’s is nice in that it shows the countdown even into seconds. Definitely more useful in a party/raid environment, but can be nice for a quick glance to see if a zone-specific buff (a la some of the zone buffs in Outland) are on or not.
4. Map – Mappy
Square, resizable, movable map. Really customizable, and can even flash the items that you’re tracking (particularly useful for the titanium chasing Death Knight).
What you can’t (always) see…
Omen Threat Meter – I used Diamond for quite awhile, but rogue sapping seemed to send it haywire, and Omen works just as well (and is more customizable).
Mik Scrolling Battle Text – I used SCT for quite awhile, but it too seemed to periodically go haywire. Effective without being too cutesy.
FuBar – Think of it like a dock (or sidebar) on your computer. A convenient dumping ground for lots of little utilities. Among the goodies here is an autorepair item and one that tells me how much gold I have spread out over my account.
Chatter – Customizes the chat panel(s), allowing for many options including clickable links and the ability to copy (or log) chat text.
Ampere – Ampere lets you manage your addons without logging out of the game. Very efficient little tool.
Baud Bag – Makes for customizable bags – I use it to display all my bags as one.
CooldownTimers3 – Gets a bit more specialized then Elkano’s does – you can see this in action in the combat photo.
This is by no means a complete list of my addons, but it’s the biggies. I’ve also included a link to a screenshot with all of my addons…feel free to ask questions about anything you see listed there!

Very nice. Thanks for putting that together. It still amazes me how configurable the WoW UI is. The devs had to think that through pretty carefully to make it possible. I ought to check out some of these cool UI addons, but I’m afraid I’d spend all the rest of my time tweaking my UI.

Hm – seeing your UI reminds me that I could probably get some use out of combat timers – and would free up a bit of space on my bars! (Or making them unnecessary to have altogether – the space I could have! /glee)
Very clean and open – the best sort of UI!

It’s been trial and error. Because of my (smaller) screen size, I’m forced to make sacrifices to accomdate things – for example, right now the text on my character screen tends to cover over each other. I may resolve that yet, but it’s not a priority.

And what’s wrong with spending all day tweaking your UI? =D

So what does the “Be Mine” achievement entail? Any horror stories?
By the way, I recently moved my blog from Today.com to self hosted. If you are still interested in reading it, you might need to update your bookmarks and/or subscriptions.
Keep up the good work!

The “Be Mine” achievement entailed getting a gift of adoration (from a guard or NPC in one of the capitals), and if RNG fell your way, getting a bag of candies. From that bag of candies, you then had 10 more RNG chances to get 8 candies. It’s bad enough a double RNG achievement was in such a huge meta achievement to begin with, but it seemed the drop rate for the bags of candies wasn’t consistant with some of the other possibilities in the gifts of adoration. One item in particular, a lovely black dress (also an achievement) was removed from the meta achievement because of how rare it was supposed to be. Yeah, so rare that I ended up with 6 of them across 3 toons.
