Ding – 72

Dec 25, 2008 I leveling.

While I know it would have been more prudent to have created this blog back when Grim was just a wee DK, not only did I lack that foresight, I didn’t even consider the possibility of speccing Unholy.  Blasphemy, I know, but I was drawn to the allure of blood (vampire jokes notwhithstanding!).

Level 72 GearWith that said, it’s been 10 levels since I made the switch and have found the joy in journeying through Azeroth with a Ghoul at my side.  I’ve got an action bar setup with my preferred order of strikes, and I’m getting pretty good at burning opponents down with my health largely intact.

But…as the title alludes, Grim dinged 72 earlier this evening.  Given that I’d made the decision to make him a blacksmith, that meant a trip to Dalaran to empty my bags and bank of all of the cobalt ore and bars I had been hoarding, and time to craft a few new items.

Right now, here’s what Grim’s gear looks like…

Cobalt Helm
Graven Shoveltusk Pendant
Spiked Cobalt Shoulders
Seared Scale Cape
Spiked Cobalt Chestpiece
Cobalt Bracers
Cobalt Gauntlets
Cobalt Belt
Cobalt Legplates
Rigid Tuskring
Ring of Indignant Rage
Talisman of the Tundra
Warsong’s Fervor
Axe of Frozen Death

Given that Grim is DPS driven, there’s a definite tendency towards equipping gear for haste and crit. While that might seem to make the regular Cobalt gear less than ideal for his purposes, there is a method to my madness. The Spiked Cobalt gear, for all its glorious DPS stats, has one glaring omission – absolutely no stamina. So mixing and matching a few of these pieces is not necessarily a bad thing.  That’s not to say that I’m absolutely making the 100% perfect choices, but they’re right for me, best I can tell.  I’ve got a few other pieces of the Spiked Cobalt sitting in my bank, not yet soulbound, and if I have the desire to equip them (when I reach the appropriate levels, that is), I can.  If I stumble across better gear as I level, then I may go that route instead.

Ultimately, this blog is as journey.  I’ll learn as I go, and hopefully I can offer tips or tricks to other DKs wanting to experience the DPS madness that is Unholy.

Hey, good to see you making of go of this, and I’ll wish you good luck and happy posting!

As far as your mentioned tendency to stack haste and crit, you might wanna peruse some stuff they’re talking about with DPS unholy on elitist jerks. Basically, haste affects your white number damage only and if you’re running a scourge-strike heavy rotation, you’re losing out on quite a bit by worrying about haste. You’ll get FAR more benefit out of attack power than haste, since most of our abilities benefit from AP, even the ones you’d think were spell damage based. I’m not a huge fan of EJ, but the math is sound. Just something to look at.

First, thank you for directing me that way – I’d never visited that site before, though I’ve heard it mentioned in passing.

I should throw out here that I’m not using a cookie-cutter Unholy build. My build dips into the frost tree slightly as well as the typical blood choices.

Still, it’s food for thought, and makes the Spiked Cobalt gear a potentially even better pick as its available to be worn…
